Tens and Units with Diggers and Toddlers
Numbers can be stimulating if they are tactile,
and hook onto their interests
Colourful, solid, smooth, round, long, spherical
flat, square, numbers, tiles, smooth, mixed up, jumbled
" What is this?
I like this.
What is a hook?
What is this for?
What does it do?"
Toddler play along side Montessori style tens and units lesson
with homemade tens bead bars and digger number cards from here

Remember Cuisenaire?
We are using Cuisenaire Rods...remember these?
It's a different approach to mathematics and can be used alongside other methods.
I bought a basic wooden set from Ebay.
They are colour coded rods in different lengths from 1cm to 10cm.
The white squares are the basic single units.
Does anyone else out there use these?

Winter Wonderland Activities
Here's some of what we are doing for the next few weeks on our Winter theme:
Beautiful real snowflake pictures- matching game
I bought an image sheet from this fab Etsy shop called Piddix
Printed two and cut out the most distinctive shapes.
This is great for older children as it can be quite challenging if you want it to.
I laminated and cut out the rest to use for counting activities.
Counting cards.
Spooning/transferring winter sequins
Sorting Wintry beads
Using his iceberg stacker: he had to arrange the pieces in as many
different ways as possible.
He really enjoyed this.

Z is for zebra
Big Seed has a fixation on the letter Z.
So we wrote some with lolly sticks...
( I wrote z in pencil for him to place the sticks upon)
We drew zebras which led to this...
which led to this...
domino zebra stripes.

Sandpaper Numerals
I made Big Seed some Montessori sandpaper numerals.
I have shown Big Seed how to trace the numbers. He has to master this before we attempt writing.
He enjoys putting the numerals in the write order...when he gets stuck I ask him to read the numbers from the beginning and then he knows which comes next.
We do this ordering activity with the number lids...these are old juice bottle lids with sticky labels on them.
Here he is matching the lids to the sandpaper numerals.
I bought a set of Montessori "bead stairs", beads on wire rods, a set of 1-10 from Ebay for
£2.
He matches the beads to the numbers, and if he is still interested he then matches the lids.
We have also matched green counters to each numeral.
