Frosty Pictures - Discovering Ice

Today was one of those days when I was so glad to be homeschooling.

Sometimes it just comes together...

Today was a frosty morning and I asked Big Seed if he wanted to make a frosty picture.

I had in mind a drawing with pastels smudged all over as frost...but he already had his own idea. Great!

He went outside and asked for the chalks.

He drew some coloured swirls and said, "That's my frosty picture."

Then he went for a walk around the garden to inspect the frost.

He came back with huge panes of ice and threw them on his drawing.

He was really investigating ice...by himself.

He found them on his toy trucks.

They were thin but he could pick them up...

Some were huge!

He could see his picture through them and it would melt.

It would crack and you could smash them into tiny pieces like glass.

He learnt to share the tiny pieces with his little brother,

to feel how cold they are and how they melt in the hand.

You can slip and slide on them and pretend to wear ice skates.

See what it's like to use chalk on a wet surface.

Mix and melt colours.

Wow, what a science lesson, completely initiated and directed by himself.

I wish everyday was as good as today.

Really Sparkly Fireworks Pictures

It rained this weekend so I lit our fireworks on Sunday and Monday...

Here is Big Seed's interpretation of his sparkler.

He dribbled the glue from his glue stick, then sprinkled 4 different tubes of glitter on top.

They look great when the sun shines on them...real sparkles.

Feeling Colour With Pastels

Pastels can make colour really tactile.

It's great for colour mixing, blending, hiding, layering...

playing !

Enjoy with pastels...they are therapeutic and so cheap too!

Table Pictures and Giant Rubbings

I taped down paper on the kitchen table and asked Big Seed to sit on it.

This was so novel he enjoyed drawing like this.

So we started to draw together in collaboration.

He would add to something I started and vice versa.

It's really strange to do something you haven't done since you were so small yourself;

I mean when was the last time you did giant scribbles?

Good for the soul for sure.

Then I thought of an extension;

In the time it took Big Seed to run upstairs for something...

I covered the table in flat objects.

I taped down coins, lolly sticks, cards, and glue spreaders.

Then I put some more paper on top and told him it was a treasure hunt with crayons.

What joyous squeals of delight and laughter at finding silly things.

Simple bliss.

6 Stickers Plus A Little Imagination

I bought a box of foam stickers from the Pound Shop.

Big Seed had to take one and stick it on the paper....then turn it into something with his felt pens.

I drew the green caterpillar as an example.

Then he did the other stickers in turn.

The yellow diamond shape is the head of a man.

The orange star is a body of a man, with an orange triangle for 2 feet.

He is holding a purple square like a bag.

The best one is the blue rectangle...it's a plaster on the little man's arm!

Love that!

Exciting Observational Drawing

I don't know about you but my memories of observational drawing

were sitting at a desk staring at a vase.

This wouldn't do for us!

We were off to the bird sanctuary to see and feed some birds...

and do the odd drawing of course!

Big Seed and Fairycake holding hands to the entrance.

Bliss.

They watched some swans and ducks from a window

and made some lovely crayon drawings.

Here is Big Seed throwing bird seed at them.

This is my favourite picture of today.

You can't tell what it is?

Well it's a large group of flamingos obviously !

Note to self... must get outside more with the crayons,

so simple.
